Jmy James Kidd and Perin Hailey McNelis dance the first ever performance of Believers. Designed by Kidd with McNelis, this dance is faith, divination, joy. Created thru the pandemic this dance has saved our asses. Dedicated to dancing till our last breath and beyond and before. Music by Tara Jane O’Neil along with other recorded material. Jmy James Kidd makes dances, textiles and community spaces. Jmy is the founder of Pieter Performance Space in Los Angeles, CA, AUNTS is Dance in NYC and MGM, a touring dance collective. Choreographic commissions include REDCAT, The Kitchen, Made in LA 2014, The Broad, The Getty, Pacific Standard Time 2013, New Museum. Residencies include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, BOFFO, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Jmy is a 2021 MacDowell Fellow. Jmy is visioning a Music and Dance Temple to be built somewhere sometime in the next 10 years. Jmy frequently collaborates with wife, musician Tara Jane O’Neil.
Perin Hailey McNelis is a dancer and botanist based in Patagonia, Arizona. Perin has performed at a number of theaters, cultural centers, museums, galleries and performance spaces in Los Angeles, Tucson, and New York and has been dancing with Jmy James Kidd since 2012. After 9 years living and dancing and learning in large cities, Perin returned to her home in Arizona in 2015 and joined the Borderlands Restoration Network native plant program where she manages the seed lab and coordinates art+ecology programming. Perin is passionate about land stewardship as an embodied arts practice. Perin raises goats and is currently in the process of starting a small farm with her partner and co-conspirator in Patagonia where they aspire to experiment with agroecology and regenerative processes for drylands and where she plans to maintain sanctuary for all borderlands beings, resident and passing through. She will hold dance/plants/shepherd artist residencies at this space in the future.
